Thought of the Day 03.16.09

Tragedy leads to packed churches. 9/11 did so, and the recession is doing it again. And although it can be tempting to view such people with disdain for only caring about God when things go wrong, this is a mistake.

Instead, we must view anything which draws people to seek God as an opportunity, even if they’re only seeking Him to alleviate their fear and pain rather than to actually find Him. The real trick is to take this surge caused by temporary circumstances and transform it into lasting conversion and a real expansion of the kingdom. But how?

By giving the people who come more than they think they need. Instead of merely telling them everything is in God’s hands and that He loves them (both true), we need to give them Christ in such a way that having Him becomes more important than having the economy. That way, whether it recovers or not, they’ll keep coming. And this time, for the right reasons.

This is "Steve from Ahwatukee" that calls in to your show periodically.

There exists an overwhelming presumption in media and academia that God does not exist and that macro evolution is an established fact that cannot be questioned. These factors would prevent most of the people in my circles from ever turning to God, no matter how dire the circumstance, mainly because they are certain He doesn't exist. I truly believe this is the number 1 problem we face in converting people to Christianity. They can't overcome the message they are getting from science that belief in God is a fairy tale.

I don't know why this issue is rarely ever talked about in most sermons and christian talk programs I hear. Thank God for web sites like answersingenesis and icr. But I really wish the Christians (and other theistic religions as well) would do more to get the word out that it is not irrational to believe in God or supernatural origin of the universe from an "un-caused" first cause or intelligent design or young earth creationism. Unfortunately, as it stands now, in our society, if you profess to believe in these things, you are viewed as some kind of a lunatic - even sometimes within Christian circles! We need to be doing as much as we can to bring the credibility to these view points that they deserve. This will remove the stumbling blocks for many people so that they will feel that they can in fact turn to God without having to leave their intelligence and critical thought behind.

Thanks for listening!
